Last week I took Princess A home to Kansas for the first time. It was a surreal experience for me to show her my childhood home, my hand prints on the driveway, and to see her play in the same backyard that I played in. Princess A reminds me a lot of my youngest sister and when she ate Cheerios at the kitchen counter it gave me flashbacks to when we were kids.
Princess A also got to meet our family dog and a ton of family friends. She was so well-behaved and everyone was so happy to meet her. A couple of people said she looks like my Grandma, which to me is the best compliment ever.
I had a lot of good experiences as a child in Kansas but also some not so good experiences. So it was also weird driving by the school where I used to get picked on and the houses that some not so nice girls used to live in. Part of me was afraid that I might run into some of these people. Luckily I didn’t.
Despite these negative memories the trip was a success and I can’t wait to take Princess A back home to Kansas.
How did you feel when you took your kids back to your childhood home?
